Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ) pays tribute to late Dominican attorney

Posted: Monday, June 29, 2020. 6:42 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: Attorney-at-law, broadcaster and magistrate Michael Bruney, 62, died last week in his native Dominica after a bout with cancer.

Dominican news media report that tributes have been pouring in from friends and colleagues including broadcaster Ken Richards, formerly of the BBC, and now president of the Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ), Adrian Saunders.

President Saunders mentioned the “tremendous debt of gratitude” owed by the JURIST Project and Belize’s Judiciary to Bruney, who acted as a consultant on a program that “encompassed backlog reduction and the institution of modern case management practices in the Belize Court of Appeal. The programme was a huge success. It fulfilled all its goals and placed the Court of Appeal on a new trajectory.”

The President described “Mikey,” as he called him, as a champion of the CCJ and recalled his organization of social engagements for judges and staff who visited the island when it acceded to the Court’s jurisdiction.

Bruney served both in private practice and as registrar of the Dominica High Court, and the CCJ president recalled his appearances on cases before the Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court and the CCJ itself. He concluded, “Mikey will be sorely missed by all of us at the CCJ and the JURIST Project. On behalf of my colleagues and all of us at the CCJ, I extend sincere condolences to his family and the Dominican Bar. May he rest in peace.”
