Five years later, still no justice for Kareem Clarke

By BBN Staff: It has been five years since Amandala journalist Kareem “Reemo” Clarke, 27, was murdered, but to this day, no one has been held responsible.

Clarke was riding his bicycle on his way home when he was callously gunned down at the corner of Lakeview and Vernon Streets on the night of July 6, 2016. One Mark Waight, who was a minor at the time, was charged for the crime, but the case would later fall apart in court as the main witness would tell the court that she had been smoking marijuana and as such could not adequately recall the events that unfolded that night.

Even more disturbing, was the fact that police investigations reveal that there was no real motive for the crime. Acting in his capacity at the time as the Officer Commanding Eastern Division South, Chester Williams, who was still Senior Superintendent of Police, gave an interview to the media explaining that Clarke’s murder was a random, indiscrimante act.

“It would appear that these persons were there, they were drinking, they were high and they just shot basically anybody who was passing by,” Williams said in September 2015 following Waight’s arrest.

Following his death, many members of the media banned together to form the Kareem Clarke Memorial Fund (KCMF), an organization that does charitable works including hosting food drives, in honor of the values that Clarke held dear to him in life.

Clarke’s family said this week that his loss is still difficult to bear, especially under the circumstances in which he was taken from them.
