Belmopan Medical Center clarifies media reports on death of COVID-19 patient from Hope Creek village

Posted: Monday, August 24, 2020. 9:02 pm CST.

By BBN Staff: The Belmopan Medical Center (BMC) says that, contrary to some media reports, Iris Rose Barillas, Belize’s 5th COVID-19 casualty, was not referred from its facility to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital (KHMH) prior to her passing.

The Medical Center said that Barillas had visited its facility on Thursday, July 30, to meet with a specialist. The specialist met Barillas and referred her to a Cardiologist in Belmopan in light of what appeared to be an issue with her heart. The Medical Center says that they found out that Barillas did visit the Cardiologist that was recommended but she never returned to the Belmopan Medical Center following that first consultation.

“We learnt of Mrs. Barillas’ admission to the Western Regional hospital days after we had closed down our clinic due to COVID-19 infections within our staff,” the BMC said. “We understand as well that she was referred from the Western Regional Hospital to KHMH and not from Belmopan Medical Center as the media has reported”.

The BMC also sent its condolences to the Barillas family and the Jehova Witness community on her passing, stressing that the staff and management is saddened by the situation which the COVID-19 pandemic has brought upon Belize and the world.

Barillas, a 74 year old resident of Hope Creek village, Stann Creek district, was rushed to the KHMH after experiencing tiredness, difficulty breathing and pneumonia. She passed away on August 19th after being intubated at the KHMH.
