San Pedro Town comes out of lockdown

Posted: Tuesday, September 1, 2020. 10:43 am CST.

By Aaron Humes: As of 12:00 a.m. this morning, September 1, 2020, the town of San Pedro is no longer under special quarantine.

The entire country now falls under one amendment.

Area representative, Manuel Heredia Jr., has agreed to take the specific concerns of the group Change for San Pedro to Cabinet. This includes more food packages for residents and a way to keep the virus off the island by controlling entrance and exit.

But on Friday during his press briefing Prime Minister Dean Barrow said San Pedro can’t have it both ways: “You are asking for the quarantine to be lifted because of the tremendous hardships that the quarantine causes. At the same time you are saying when you lift the quarantine find a way to stop people from coming to the island. That’s the only way to stop them, if the island is quarantined and entrance to the island and exit from the island are both prohibited. You can’t have it any other way.”

The Prime Minister maintained that if San Pedro and the rest of Belize are to return to “normal,” “…life as normal would mean that people will be free to come and go. I repeat the only way to try to ensure that that reopening does not result in quick order in some kind of return to an outbreak of the virus, is for people to observe the rules.”
