By Aaron Humes: No date has been set for the general election beyond a hint of the first week in November by Prime Minister Dean Barrow, who alone can do so.
But while former Prime Minister George Price famously said elections are won on Election Day, modern campaigners know that enough transfers and new applicants on your side can seal the deal.
After a busy July and August in the registration offices, Chief Elections Officer Josephine Tamai has told Channel 7 News that more than 21 thousand Belizeans took advantage. Of these, more than 8,500 applicants sought to transfer between divisions, and a little more than 13 thousand applied to join the electoral rolls. There is no indication if these figures are above average for this projected election year.
Now, the Department buckles down to investigating and approving these applications, including to see who actually lives where they say they live.
Typically, one month’s notice is given for the calling of elections. The National Assembly completes its five-year term in office on November 13, which by law gives the Prime Minister a set period of ninety days to call the election. If he dissolves the Assembly on advice to the Governor General, thirty days’ notice is typically given.
The electoral roll in June stood at 163,974 voters, down from the number eligible in the 2015 election at 196,587.
