John Saldivar suggests that political parties should debate, Belize People’s Front agrees

Posted: Thursday, September 17, 2020. 11:13 am CST.

By BBN Staff: Belmopan Area Representative John Saldivar has publicly pitched the idea of major political parties and independent candidates hosting and participating in debates about national issues.

Saldivar explained via his Facebook page that he had received an invitation from the Love Foundation to participate in a debate between Belmopan candidates, but later learned that the debate was finalized before he had an opportunity to respond. He noted that he is prepared to debate with the other candidates and hopes that some other organization would organize another debate.

“Perhaps the political parties and independent candidates can get together to form a National Debates Commission that will organize these debates and deal with rules and format,” Saldivar said.

Our newsroom spoke with Nancy Marin, Party Leader of the Belize People’s Front (BPF), who said that she supports and encourages healthy political debate, stressing that it is uplifting for not only the candidates but for Belize as a whole.

“I believe that it is important to elevate the political language, the political bar, if you will, in Belize,” Marin said.

Notably, the other political third party, the Belize Progressive Party (BPP), has been calling for political debates since its inception back in 2015.
