By BBN Staff: The Orange Walk Humane Society (OWHS) is calling on community members to help solve a brutal case of animal cruelty reported this week.
The volunteer-led organization said that they had received reports of an injured dog on Main Street. They retrieved the dog and a veterinarian determined that someone had thrown hot oil over it’s back, causing severe burns.
“We can’t understand why this would be done! We are asking for anyone who saw what happened to please reach out to us, all reports will remain anonymous. We know our Orangewalkeños know better than this. Report animal abuse!” the OWHS said.
The organization has been caring for the animal but says that it needs additional support and hopes that the community will band together to assist.
The OWHS forms a part of the United Humane Societies of Belize (UHSB), an alliance of humane societies across the country that promote the humane treatment of all animals, do outreach and awareness activities and lobby for legislative changes to address animal cruelty in Belize.
The UHSB recently started a petition to have the fines associated with animal cruelty increased as a means of curbing heinous acts against animals. The petition has almost 1,300 signatures.
