By Aaron Humes: A rare murder took place in the village of Placencia, Stann Creek District, on Wednesday night – in what might be considered its “downtown” area, the municipal pier.
Deputy Head of National Crimes Investigation Branch, Senior Superintendent Hilberto Romero, says police are questioning three persons – Trevaun Humes, Roselia Teul, and Francine Zelaya – who were the last persons seen with the victim, fisherman George Murphy, 21, before a gunman emerged from behind a nearby tree and shot him multiple times. Humes, Teul, and Zelaya were not injured.
Police are early into their investigation and have not uncovered a motive. Murphy is known to police and has been charged in various incidents and served prison time.
Sr. Supt. Romero said police are following leads on the ground but are not aware of any gang rivalry in the village as a possible motive in Murphy’s death.
Murphy reportedly told his killer before he was shot, “You’ve got the wrong man,” but police say that so far this is not an indication that he was mistakenly targeted.
