By BBN Staff: As the sargassum seaweed phenomenon continues to affect the region, the latest forecast from the National Meteorological Service of Belize (Met Service) says that several areas could see some sargassum washing up on their shores early this week.

The Met Service explained that satellite observations show a few sargassum mats offshore the country.

The forecast is for a medium chance of those sargassum mats drifting ashore in San Pedro Town, Caye Caulker, Hopkins, and Placencia, but that those mats would produce minimal impact. The Met Service said that the forecast is good up to October 21, 2020.

Sargassum mats drifting ashore first became a problem in Belize back in 2014 and has been a recurring problem since. The mats of seaweed pile up on beaches, ruining the aesthetic value and permeating the air in the surrounding area with a putrid smell akin to rotten eggs when the plants begin decomposing.
