Ministry of Education begins the first round of e-learning device distributions for students in Cayo

Posted: Thursday, October 29, 2020. 1:24 pm CST.

By BBN Staff: The Ministry of Education, as a part of its distanced learning initiative to ensure students receive instruction during the COVID-19 pandemic, held its first distribution of tablets in the Cayo district today.

Keynote speaker at the ceremony, Minister of Education Patrick Faber, noted that the Cayo district was the first stop as Cayo students were not a part of the Ministry’s “Digi Learn” pilot project last year which introduced digital learning activities to high school students in various parts of the country.

“Yes, it is election time, for those that are making that painfully obvious. But we did not decide on a pandemic to come at election time,” Faber said.

He added that the pandemic helped to emphasize that digital learning is the direction education in Belize needs to head in and should have been heading in a long time ago. He noted that the Logit T10L Phablets (a type of tablet capable of using sim cards) were procured with funds ($7 million) from the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB)

The Ministry is expecting to distribute phablets to over 15,000 students at varying grade levels through the initiative.

The MOE has scheduled the distributions of devices for other districts to be between the end of this week and next week. Those distributions include Belize District- Friday, October 30, at 2:00 p.m.; Corozal, Monday, November 2, 9:30 a.m.; Orange Walk- Monday, November 2, 2:00 p.m.; Stann Creek- Tuesday, November 3, 9:30 a.m.; and Toledo- Tuesday, November 3, 2:00 p.m.
