By Aaron Humes: National club football champion Verdes F.C., hobbled by losing too many of their players to COVID-19-related quarantine, isolation and treatment, has stood by its “reluctant decision” to withdraw from the CONCACAF League and not face Arcahaie F.C. of Haiti.
The team reported this week via its social media that CONCACAF had decided to reschedule the match for next Tuesday, November 3. But the team says it has continued COVID-19 restrictions and related challenges and therefore had no option but to withdraw.
The Green Machine had been training in Cancun, Mexico in preparation for the match. It organized flights for players through Panama and Miami, Florida; however, two players tested positive in Panama and others in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, where the match was to be played. It was decided to bring the entire team home where they have gone into quarantine.
The team had stated via a press release last week that the majority of players and staff affected were “asymptomatic” and otherwise in fine spirits.
If the Government can be persuaded, Verdes will begin the defense of its title in a bubble situation and await a chance at vindication next year.
