Posted: Tuesday, November 17, 2020. 3:43 pm CST.

By BBN Staff: The National Hurricane Center (NHC) advised of the threat of catastrophic flash flooding and mudslides across parts of Central America from Hurricane Iota.

As of this afternoon, the center of Iota was located inland about 75 miles (125 km) east-southeast of Tegucigalpa, Honduras.

Iota is moving toward the west near 12 mph. The center of the storm will move into southern Honduras tonight before dissipating near El Salvador early Wednesday.

Maximum sustained winds have decreased to near 60 mph (95 km/h)with higher gusts.

Tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 195 miles (315 km) from the center.

Iota should weaken to a tropical depression this evening and degenerate into a remnant low-pressure area on Wednesday.

Iota is expected to produce the following rainfall accumulations through Thursday from 10 to 20 inches in southern Belize.
