UDP calls for reconvening of National Oversight Committee

Posted: Tuesday, November 24, 2020. 1:29 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: The now-Opposition United Democratic Party extended its wishes to Prime Minister John Briceno for a speedy recovery from the Covid-19 infection.

In light of the fast spreading of COVID-19, the UDP says it urges the new administration to reconvene the Covid-19 National Oversight Committee, which was dissolved by former Prime Minister Dean Barrow just before the General Elections.

In a statement, the party said, “The UDP is ready and committed to support and participate in the national effort to get this still expanding surge of new infections and deaths under control. We note that Belize is currently in a critical window and actions taken over the next few days will save lives or result in additional sickness and deaths.”

It added that “Health experts expect a spike in new infections to be manifested in the coming days as a result of Election Day and its generated celebration activities. Let us act before it is too late.”

Briceno has previously committed to restoring the Committee, which he co-chaired with Prime Minister Dean Barrow between its formation in March and his resignation months later over policy disagreements.
