The miracle of birth in a police station bathroom

Posted: Monday, November 30, 2020. 11:22 am CST.

By Aaron Humes: For the second time this year, police officers have had to assist in the miracle of birth at one of their stations.

The earlier incident took place in Belize City in front of the Mahogany Street substation and involved at least one member of the Gang Suppression Unit (GSU).

This time, we are told, a Honduran female detainee delivered inside the bathroom at the police station in Orange Walk Town.

The pregnant detainee  complained of abdominal pain and requested to use the bathroom. She was taken out of the cell block and then gave birth with the assistance of a male and female officer, who escorted her and the baby to the Northern Regional Hospital a few hundred yards away.

Left to be answered is how can police reasonably detain a woman in “piss house” conditions while she is expecting to give birth at any moment, without ethically having some kind of proper medical assistance on hand despite whatever she may have been detained for. Also, questionable is why the woman was not quickly transported to the nearby hospital when her water broke.

We hope to get those answers at some point today. In the meantime, congratulations to the new mother and the officers who assisted in the miracle.
