The symbolic sounding of the sirens

Posted: Monday, December 14, 2020. 11:21 am CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: At 6 last night, the Fire Departments countrywide sounded their sirens.

Residents honked their horns in memory of Doctors Kevin and Kenneth Guerra, who lost their battle with COVID-19.

The twin doctors are the first medical professionals in Belize to lose their lives to the virus.

Several months ago, at the beginning of the lockdown and strict curfew regulations, the Fire Department sounded the sirens to warn all to get home.

Today, the symbolic sounding of the siren was a request by the medical community and the public who continue to mourn loss of loved ones to COVID-19.

Now, more than ever, the public is reminded of their own personal responsibility to take the necessary precautions, wear their masks, wash their hands regularly, practice social distancing and refrain from public gatherings and events.

Daily, people in our country lose loved ones to COVID-19 and as we lit our candles for the 195 lives lost in Belize, let us remember that we can help to save the lives of our families and friends by adhering to the protocols to avoid the spread of COVID-19.

You can save lives by following the guidelines.
