Murder of Malik Acosta a “crime of opportunity”

Posted: Monday, December 21, 2020. 6:44 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: Twenty-eight-year-old Malik Acosta was, quite literally, in the wrong place at the wrong time on Sunday night.

Acosta was driving in the area of West Street and Water Lane when someone opened fire on him.

Acosta, gravely wounded, tried to make it to hospital. During his frantic drive he accidentally struck George Evan Lewis of Orange Street, an older fireman who got his leg broken as a result. He also hit a vehicle parked in front of New Asia Restaurant and continued on Youth for the Future Drive and over the Belchina Bridge into Douglas Jones Street, where he crashed into the façade of L and F Chinese Restaurant.

The car dealer from Tigris Street, police revealed, was an associate of a gang different from the one in whose territory he was driving. It appears his enemies took advantage and eliminated a possible threat, prompting CIB chief Assistant Superintendent of Police Alejandro Cowo to advise residents to continue to support Police and in the case of the gangsters, to keep to their territory in this holiday season.
