UNICEF delivers early childhood development kit to children in Belize

Posted: Monday, December 21, 2020. 2:01 pm CST.

By BBN Staff: Last week, UNICEF Belize delivered early childhood development kits to children in Seine Bight and Gales Point Manatee in Belize.

UNICEF noted that it supports early childhood development in Belize because learning is optimized when children have a strong foundation built in their early years.

As a part of its program focus to promote Early Childhood Development (ECD) to parent and partners, UNICEF Belize assemblies ECD Kits that include the materials and equipment to support learning opportunities for children from birth to eight years old.

As preschools and primary school remain closed due to the coronavirus pandemic there is a need to support parents with caring for and teaching their children at home.

The ECD Kit is intended to support the cognitive as well as the psychosocial and physical development of young children in emergencies, disasters, and unstable conditions.

Following COVID-19 regulations and safety procedures, several families of the village attended scheduled educational sessions in groups of six persons at the Seine Bight Community Center.

There they received the kits and Denise Robateau, Early Childhood Education Officer, facilitated a demonstration of how to use the kit’s materials and equipment to stimulate their children.

In 2012, the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), together with a wide range of partners, developed a model of care and development and a package of materials entitled Care for Child Development (CCD) to support families in promoting the development of young children. Families who attended the sessions received a copy of the Care for Child Development (CCD) Atlas.

The Care for Child Development (CCD) Atlas was developed by the Early Childhood Technical Working Group from the Ministries of Health, Education and Human Development, with the support of UNICEF.

It is a guide for parents and CCD providers showing how to play and communicate with your child.
