University of Belize Board of Trustees gets seven new members

Posted: Tuesday, February 2, 2021. 6:15 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: The full Board of Trustees of the national university, the University of Belize (UB), met for the first time on January 22, convened by the Secretary of the Board and President of UB, Professor Clement Sankat.

The Board is now chaired by representative of Minister of Education Francis Fonseca, fellow attorney Anthony Sylvestre, and retired Major Lloyd Jones acts as vice-chairman.

The Board has the mandate to further the development of the University as the National Institution and echoed the sentiments that this can bring tremendous opportunities for Belize’s young people and Belize’s own advancement.

The University entered financial turmoil last year that resulted in cuts in salaries and services and a delay to classes re-opening virtually, while the faculty and staff organized as a trade union.

In addition to Sylvestre and Jones, new members are CEO in the Ministry of Health Dr. Deysi Mendez; Eccleston Irving, representing the private sector in agriculture; Cresencio Sosa, Sr., representing the private sector in industry; Dr. Yvonne Palma, representing the Ministry of Education, and Servulo Baeza, CEO in the Ministry of Agriculture. Incumbents are former BNTU president Luke Palacio, representing the National Trade Union Congress of Belize (NTUCB); Dr. June Young, representing faculty; Fermin Magana, representing the Association of Tertiary Level Institutions in Belize (ATLIB); Darlene Vernon representing the University Alumni Association; Steve Good as students’ representative; the Reverend Dr. Fred Shyu of the Belize Council of Churches; Clint Foreman of the National Council of Education; and Dr. Oxaku Tehu Kax’oxo, II, the representative of non-governmental organizations and civil society.
