Said Musa writes Joe Biden to end Cuba embargo, terrorism sanction

Posted: Saturday, February 13, 2021. 2:41 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: Former Prime Minister of Belize, Said Musa, recently wrote new President of the United States, Joe Biden, concerning American action against the Republic of Cuba.

Since 1959, when the late Fidel Castro took over government by revolution from Fulgencio Batista, the U.S. has imposed an economic embargo against the island, briefly relaxed by President Barack Obama in his term in office.

Donald Trump, aiming to keep the backing of Cuban and other exiles in Florida, has tightened those sanctions and, only ten days before leaving office, placed Cuba on America’s list of state sponsors of terrorism.

Musa writes to Biden that reversing the Trump designation and lifting the embargo will represent justice for Cuba, the U.S. and the region after decades of “immeasurable damage” caused by the embargo. He argues that Cuba is a nation of peace and promotes cooperation, not violence. He reminds Biden that Cuba has been a victim of terrorism and even so Cuban professionals have been in many nations fighting pandemics and disasters like Ebola AIDS and COVID-19.

Musa is also calling on all Belizeans and friends in the region to join him in supporting his position.

Biden is expected to be more sympathetic to Cuba, but action is expected to be well down his priority list after more urgent concerns like economic recovery, defeating the COVID-19 pandemic and restoring unity in his divided nation.

Cuba, meanwhile, has turned to opening up some parts of its economy to private business.
