Municipal and by-election 2021: Corozal Bay votes

Posted: Thursday, February 18, 2021. 2:18 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: In addition to the Corozal Town municipal elections, residents of Corozal Bay division will vote for a replacement for the late David “Dido” Vega, elected in the November 11 general election, who died of COVID-19 before he could take his seat a month later.

The Corozal Bay division encompasses polling areas 39 (St. Francis Xavier Roman Catholic School and Corozal Methodist School) which generally comprises northern Corozal Town, and polling area 40 (St. Paul Anglican School) which comprises generally southern Corozal Town.

Some 5,712 registered voters are eligible to participate in this election.

The candidates are Elvia Vega Samos, alias “Elvie,” for the People’s United Party, and Hilberto Campos for the United Democratic Party. Samos was chair of the constituency committee for the blue and sister of David, while Campos is a popular former Town Mayor.

Polling begins at 7:00 a.m. and concludes at 6:00 p.m. Counting takes place at St. Francis Xavier Roman Catholic School beginning at 8:00 p.m. Teresita Miranda is returning officer.

We’ll have more on the procedures for voting in this and the Corozal Town municipal election as discussed by Chief Elections Officer Josephine Tamai later on.
