Belmopan boasts first female Mayor and Deputy Mayor

By BBN Staff: Belize’s Capital, the Garden City, Belmopan boasts women leadership in local government.

On March 3, the residents of Belmopan elected a new city council with Sharon Palacio as its first female mayor.

The elected council has met and selected Guadalupe Chicas as its deputy mayor.

Mayor Palacio noted that the selection is “affirming to women in leadership and reiterates the message that women can lead.”

Deputy Mayor Chicas was one of 3 female Councillor candidates successful at the polls.

“Deputy Mayor Chicas brings to the position her charismatic leadership and her portfolio includes Community Relations, Environmental Awareness, Market Management, Recreational Planning and Adopt a Park,” a statement from the council said.

Mayor Palacio and Deputy Mayor Chicas pledged resoundingly to work in partnership with the City residents, with a particular focus to transform the quality of life for all citizens, especially fostering opportunities for women and girls.

The council extended a Happy International Women’s month to all.
