Tourism Minister talks travel with largest newspaper in Spain

Posted: Monday, March 15, 2021. 4:22 pm CST.

By Benjamin Flowers: The Belize Tourism Board (BTB) has announced that Minister of Tourism and Diaspora Relations, Anthony Mahler, recently concluded an interview with Planeta Futuro Report of El País, the newspaper with the largest daily circulation in Spain.

The BTB explained that the interview addressed a “wide-range of issues affecting Belize’s tourism, including the impact of the pandemic on the industry.”

Mahler reportedly used the opportunity to highlight the Government of Belize’s efforts in rebuilding the country’s tourism industry, including the development of a new sustainable and resilient tourism model. The minister also shared the efforts being rolled out to ensure visitor safety in the upcoming months as global travel begins to resume.

The interview gives Belize a unique opportunity to increase the country’s exposure in the European tourism market, which Mahler recently said would not be a priority for Belizean tourism marketing campaigns at this time. Data from the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) shows that the majority of outbound tourists from Spain, visit places such as the United Kingdom, Germany, and France.

With a feature on Belize showing up in the largest daily newspaper, Belize’s tourism product will serve as a unique alternative to Spanish travelers, especially since many European countries still currently have their borders closed due to the pandemic.
