Election petition discontinued against Mayor Bernard Wagner

By Aaron Humes: The United Democratic Party has apparently elected to discontinue its planned election petition against Mayor of Belize City Bernard Wagner.

Shortly before elections on March 7, the UDP aired accusations that Mayor Wagner misrepresented his address in order to run for office in the Old Capital as incumbent. He holds a Los Lagos, Ladyville, Belize District address while living and working in Belize City proper.

An attempt to injunct his participation failed and voters settled the matter by handing Wagner a convincing re-election over the Orson Picart-led UDP slate.

Now UDP chairman and attorney Michael Peyrefitte and Melbourne Wade have served notice that per election rules they will discontinue their petition challenging the validity of Wagner’s election.

Wagner is in his second three-year term after first winning in 2018, unseating the UDP after 12 years at City Hall.
