Opposition response to Budget: Instead of blame and panic, make real change

By Aaron Humes: Leader of the Opposition Patrick Faber has led off the Budget Debate calling for the Government to not squander its political gains from November and March and to create the change it promised and which Belizeans have called for.

Faber reminded the House of his former boss Prime Minister Dean Barrow, who in 2008 spoke of a “renewal of hope” and self-confidence in the nation after a battering decade under Said Musa.

In contrast, Faber said, Prime Minister John Briceño counted coup and failed to inspire confidence in himself and his policies from the trade unions, now protesting on Independence Hill. He appeared “panicked”, “seeking sympathy” and without a coherent plan after shadowing three successive Barrow administrations.

Belize had up to five months payment for imports and is actually outside the top ten most indebted countries in the world, according to Faber and not sixth. Further, more than half of Belize’s bilateral debt is to friendly nations like Taiwan and Venezuela, as opposed to the infamous “Superbond.”

Faber commended the four-point plan Briceño introduced to combat debt but noted, “talk is cheap,” promising to continue holding his administration’s feet to the fire to maintain his commitments – and noting that GDP fell commensurate with increased borrowing due to the pandemic.
