By Zoila Palma: The Caribbean Climate Outlook Forum (CariCOF) informs that this year, the Caribbean will experience increased rainfall amounts in the Bahamas, the Cayman Islands, Cuba, and the Guianas.

But, in Belize and other Caribbean nations, there may be up to a 1-month delay in the wet season.

“By contrast, the onset of the wet season may be delayed by up to one month in the other islands and in Belize,” CariCOF said.

CariCOF also explained that extreme wet weather is forecasted for May to July meaning there will be a high potential for flooding.

In addition, dry spells, though decreasing in frequency, may spark heat waves throughout Belize and the Caribbean Islands.

For the first 3 months of 2021, CariCOF says that the dry season in Belize and the islands stood out in terms of moderate short-term drought appearing in many areas.

A Shorter-term drought is expected by end of July along the northern Bahamas, southeast and west-central Belize, Western Cuba, and the United States and the Virgin Islands.
