By Zoila Palma: Today, Caribbean Women in Leadership (CIWiL) Belize extended congratulations to its member, Dr. Carla Barnett on her appointment as the incoming Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Secretary General.
“This is a historic selection, not only for Belize but for the entire Caribbean Region, as Dr. Barnett will serve as the first-ever woman CARICOM Secretary-General, having previously served as the first female Deputy Secretary-General of CARICOM from 1997 to 2002. We proudly recognize that Dr. Barnett is the first Belizean to hold this post,” CIWiL stated.
Dr. Barnett was elected during the virtual 21st Special Meeting of the CARICOM Leaders which was headed by the chairman of the 15-member grouping of countries and Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago, Dr. Keith Rowley.
Dr. Barnett will assume her newly elected role as Secretary-General of CARICOM in August 2021 after replacing Dominican-born diplomat, Irwin LaRocque, who has served in the post of CARICOM Secretary General since August of 2011.
“CIWiL Belize National Chapter which is supported by the Regional Board and sister chapters in the Caribbean, is delighted by the distinguished recognition of Dr. Carla Barnett and the invaluable contributions towards advancing regional development including gender equality and women’s full and equal participation across all levels of leadership,” the organization added.
CIWiL says that its members celebrate Dr. Barnett’s appointment to this pivotal regional leadership position.
“We wish Dr. Barnett all the best in her new post as she continues to inspire young girls and women across Belize and the Caribbean Region,” the organization stated.
