By Zoila Palma: The Belize Defence Force is facilitating a 7-week military paralegal course.

The course began on May 25 and is focused on preparing potential Military Paralegals to understand the legal system that exists within the country by integrating military law with it.

The goal is to instill professional ethics, evaluate, and develop each student’s abilities to hone, dissect, analyze, and interpret legal opinions to their commanders when called to do so.

The course is divided into 4 phases: Professional Development, Civil Law Training, Rules of Engagement, and Military Law Training.

The twenty-five participants include officers from the Belize Defence Force, the Belize Police Department and a civilian from Accounts Office at the Belize Defence Force.

The course director is Attorney at Law, Major Lionel Olivera.
