Delta COVID-19 variant believed to be in Belize

By Zoila Palma: As health experts continue to grapple with the COVID-19 pandemic, the Minister of Health and Wellness, Michel Chebat said on Channel 5’s Open Your Eyes this morning that health experts believe the delta variant has been detected in Belize.

Chebat says that a new COVID-19 variant was detected and the sample has been sent to Baylor University to determine the specific type.

“We don’t have the technology in Belize to determine which of the variants it is. But we are working with Baylor University, so they will be doing the gene sequencing for us…..The medical team that advises the ministry believes that it is the delta variant and one of the features of that variant is that it spreads very quickly,” Chebat said.

The results are expected to arrive on Friday.
