Prime Minister: “We can get back to 110 percent”

Posted: Wednesday, June 30, 2021. 3:52 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: Prime Minister John Briceño hailed the milestone of open vaccination by the Ministry of Health and Wellness.

Our success is a result of “listening to the science” and tackling the heavy toll of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Prime Minister said.

It is critical for the Government to ease dependence on the public teat and get people back to work, the P.M. said.

Call it luck, call it blessing, call it hard work – it may be a combination of all three, but the P.M. also noted the planning, especially in the Ministry of Tourism and Belize Tourism Board, which is in charge of nearly half the economic engine, and in turn rolls over to the rest of economy from agriculture to services.

With 70 to 80 percent capacity, Belize can get back into overdrive by the end of the year.

Briceño revealed that it may be time for employers to consider mandating vaccination for employees to work, and that Cabinet has considered such a mandate for the Public Service, but “we’re not there yet.”

He also paid tribute to the frontline workers who have worked hard to get us back to where we are now.
