Is “Delta variant” behind Belize’s third wave of COVID-19?

Posted: Friday, July 30, 2021. 10:18 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: Belize approaches the end of July apparently facing a third wave or surge in the spread of the Sars-nCov-2 (COVID-19) virus.

And according to Minister of Health Michel Chebat, it could be fueled by the nightmarish Delta variant of the disease, first located in India and quickly spread to Britain, then the United States and now all around the world.

The Delta variant is 60 percent more transmissible than the original virus and this week the Minister said health professionals are laboring under the belief that we have the Delta variant in Belize. Results from samples sent for testing in the U.S. are not yet back.

As of Monday, July 26, there were over 170 active cases of the COVID-19 virus in the Belize District, with more added since then.

Chebat described the situation in Belize City as a major concern. He noted that whereas before, a couple people would be infected when the virus entered a home, now, entire families are being infected. However, he said today, there was not yet a concern as to locking down part or all of the Old Capital.

He notified that they plan to continue on a weekly basis the “Get the facts, dispel the myths” show which started this past Monday.
