Police storm popular Belize City lounge, Shisha, over COVID-19 regulations

Posted: Monday, August 16, 2021. 8:57 pm CST.

By BBN Staff: Police reportedly arrested and charged the proprietors of the popular Belize City establishment Shisha Hooka and Billiards Lounge over breaches of the COVID-19 regulations last Friday.

Commissioner of Police Chester Williams, speaking on the incident today, said that officers responded to a number of reports that restaurants in Belize City were packed to capacity, and patrols were around making checks.

“Upon police visiting that particular establishment, it was packed to capacity and under AC (air conditioning) so they were in clear violation of the regulations,” Williams said.

Williams said that under the current regulations, restaurants are to operate at 50 percent capacity, and must either be operating in open-air settings or, for those who do not have that option, they must have the establishment with windows and doors open to allow for airflow. Restaurants under the current regulations cannot utilize air conditioners.
