By Hugh O’Brien: On Friday, September 10th Belize’s U20 Women’s football team left the country enroute to Curacao to participate in the qualifying round to the 2022 Concacaf Women’s Under-20 Championship (CWU20).

Thirteen teams are participating in the  qualifying round and they will be divided into four groups. The winner of each group will advance directly to the knockout stage of the Championship in 2022.

Belize will be in Group D along with Grenada and Suriname. Grenada had finished in the top half of their 2020 CWU20 Qualifying group and reached the 2020 CWU20 Round of 16 and are the favourites in Group D.

Group A is the only group that will have four teams, namely Bermuda, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Dominica and U.S. Virgin Islands. Group B includes the Cayman Islands, Anguilla and Martinique.

Host nation Curacao will see action in Group C, along with Saint Lucia and Antigua and Barbuda.

In a social media post, the Football Federation of Belize (FFB) encouraged Belizeans to join them “in wishing the team safe travels as they are on there way to Curaçao to represent Belize”. “We love the colors, we love the smiles and we definitely love the excitement on their faces!!” the FFB said.

The Group Stage and Knockout Stage of the Championship are scheduled to take place in the first quarter of 2022.
