Police cracking down on violations of COVID-19 regulations this Independence Day

By BBN Staff: Belize’s 40-anniversary of Independence comes the day after stricter COVID-19 regulations came into effect, severely limiting the capability to have celebrations in most areas of the country. The Belize Police Department stressed today that officers will be out in full force this Independence Day to ensure that the COVID-19 regulations are being respected.

Director of Communications for the Office of the Commissioner of Police, Assistant Superintendent of Police, Fitzroy Yearwood said that the department is trying to communicate to the public that the regulations are in place for their own good and that officers will be vigilant in enforcing them.

“We intend to be very strict on curfew violators, or the people that they believe that they can defy the law,” Yearwood said. “We have to stick to the regulations. regardless if it doesn’t sit well with us, we must respect the law of the land.”

Yearwood appealed to all Belizeans to consider that individual rights do not supersede the need to obey the law. He called on all Belizeans to abide by the law this Independence Day and assured that if they do so there will be no “unnecessary run-ins” with police.
