Dr. George Gough: ‘Government must do better at managing resources’

Posted: Thursday, October 7, 2021. 11:03 am CST.

By Aaron Humes: Former CEO in the Ministry of Health Dr. George Gough decried recent closures of certain public clinics, which has created a vicious cycle.

Because of the COVID priority, persons with chronic illnesses have become more vulnerable to COVID-19 as having underlying conditions.

Personnel need to be more properly managed so that we don’t have overwork, exacerbated by patients coming with clear signs and symptoms that could have been treated before, Gough said.

Key medications are being ignored for non-priorities and that hurts the situation even more, he expounded.

And the regional situation needs to be regularized so that the hospitals in the districts can make the best use of their resources. The powers in charge must truly listen to the professionals and take their advice to heart, he continued.

On vaccinations, Dr. Gough commended efforts to procure vaccines, “but we can do better than half the population with at least one dose and 30 percent fully vaccinated. Now it’s time for the next steps to boost the latter figure, including incentives targeted to families to expand the vaccination campaign.”

Dr. Gough observed that some are simply afraid of the lines at vaccination centers, so perhaps change the strategy to include nongovernmental organizations and get ideas from those with specific experiences in addition to the main message that “vaccines save lives.”
