Not all reactions to government procuring electric buses program are positive

Posted: Saturday, November 6, 2021. 7:07 pm CST.

By BBN Staff: Earlier today Breaking Belize News ran a story about electric buses being piloted in Belize by the Ministry of Public Utilities, Energy, and Logistics embarking in a pilot electric buses project as part of its “Driving Belize to Electric Mobility” program.

And while Minister Rodwell Ferguson appeared very enthused with the idea as he presented during the week on Love Television and Channel 5, not everyone is on the same page with him.

While there are some positive comments like a BBN Facebook follower who said that “this is a wonderful progressive move. Excellent job. Making Belize modern”, and a few made progressive suggestions like “If you truly want to drive Belize to Electric Mobility remove all duties and taxes on Electric Vehicles… that will incentivise private vehicles to go green. Also implement a proper charging network,” others don’t agree.

A BBN follower said that we can’t even keep the blackouts in check, and the powers that be want electric buses. Another said we need better roads while another said it a “Cart ahead of the horse move” saying we need to see “how these will hold up on these streets we drive”.

Another follower questioned how the buses will be charged. Still another asked who will fix the buses and if they will have to fly in experts to fix them?

Other followers echoed the previously mentioned sentiments. One expressed concerned about Belize City’s under sea-level situation: “What about when the city get flooded.”

The following are some of the other comments: “The idea sounds excellent but how about trying to eliminate poverty or making education free for all levels.”

“Sorry but how comes ministry will acquire buses while hospitals have no medication. People health should come first. Why are we paying social security and can’t get medications when you go to hospitals.”

Of course, someone had to be completely off rail: “I don’t get it. A small country with small population having little to no impact on carbon emissions. Please help me to understand.”
