Bar Association of Belize speaks up for Director of Public Prosecutions

By Aaron Humes: The Bar Association of Belize has come to the defense of one of its most prominent members amid speculation attempting to link Director of Public Prosecutions, Cheryl-Lynn Vidal, to the November 5 plane landing in Bladen, Toledo; for which 11 persons including a police officer assigned as her security detail, have been arrested and charged.

The Bar Association of Belize, in a statement, described the social media statements against Director Vidal as “baseless and scurrilous”, echoing her words from a rare statement released on Thursday in which she announced her office would not participate in the Bladen 11 prosecution.

It warns that the allegations being made “are speculative, irresponsible and indeed defamatory,” adding that the Senior Counsel – its former president, has been dedicated, competent, a person of integrity and high ethical standards in the pursuit of justice from her independent and impartial office. Indeed, there has been no official suggestion by police or anyone that she was involved, and in any case, she has formally denied it, and so it is wrong to “perpetuate a logical fallacy by trying to build a case of guilt by association.”

Additionally, the Bar reminds of the “presumed innocent” provision in judicial practice and the right to a fair trial before the courts, not in the press or on social media, and further expresses confidence in the criminal justice system – confidence not completely shared by the population at this point.
