Marcel Palma, former mayoral candidate for the BPP and prominent agriculturalist, passes

Posted: Sunday, November 21, 2021. 1:46 pm CST.

By Hugh O’Brien: Breaking Belize News (BBN) has been informed that former Mayoral candidate for the Belize Progressive Party (BPP) and prominent agriculturalist, Marcel Palma passed away this weekend.

In a release issued on Sunday morning, the BPP said that it “is deeply saddened and mourns the untimely passing of our beloved brother and friend” and expressed their “deepest sympathies to his children, parents, all his family and friends”.

“Many of us also knew Marcel as a vibrant and trustworthy politician…We are so proud to have known, worked and shared our love for Punta Gorda and the future of our community with this true Son of Punta Gorda”, said the BPP.

In 2021 Marcel offered himself as Mayoral candidate for Punta Gorda and made history when he became the first third party candidate to receive more votes than a major political party, in this case the United Democratic Party’s candidate. While he did not win the mayoral seat, Marcel rose in the ranks of the BPP and was appointed Deputy Chairman.

Apart from being an active politician, Marcel is also known as a passionate agriculturalist. He attended the Belize College of Agriculture (BCA but now known as the UB Agriculture campus in Central Farm) where he advanced his agriculture knowledge and began to explore his passion for this career. After leaving BCA, Marcel returned to his native town to contribute to its development, later joining the Toledo Community College (TCC) as a teacher. Marcel used his contacts from being a teacher at TCC along with his new found political foundation to intensify his quest to spread his agricultural knowledge through meaningful and practical initiatives in Punta Gorda.

“He always strived for the best for his community and dedicated his life to inspire the youths through his commitment as a teacher at Toledo Community College”,  the BPP noted.

This author had the pleasure of teaching Marcel Palma at the Belize College of Agriculture. On my behalf and on behalf of Breaking Belize News, sincere condolences is extended to Marcel’s family and friends and the extended community in Punta Gorda that Marcel so cared for and loved.
