By Rubén Morales Iglesias: “Taiwan’s participation in this global health organization has been excluded for political reasons,” said Belize’s Minister of Health and Wellness Michel Chebat on Tuesday at the World Health Assembly (WHA), according to Focus Taiwan.
Chebat spoke highly of Taiwan’s epidemic prevention performance, saying that the Asian nation has played a pivotal role in monitoring the COVID-19 pandemic worldwide and in early warning systems of infectious diseases. Chebat said Taiwan is an indispensable part of the global health system.
Haiti and Nauru had also expressed support for Taiwan’s participation at the World Health Assembly.
The World Health Organization (WHO) member states sent their representatives to the WHA special session being held from November 29 to December 1 to consider developing a WHO convention agreement on pandemic preparedness and response.
Chebat added that since viruses know no borders, not permitting Taiwan’s inclusion in the WHA is not good for disease prevention and building a better world.
Also in support of Taiwan, Haitian Minister of Health Alex Larsen said “no one is safe, until everyone is safe” while Nauruan President Lionel Rouwen Aingimea said the WHO must become more diverse and tolerant in promoting intergovernmental cooperation and ought to include all concerned parties and not only member states.
