Police Commissioner embarrassed over video of drunken police officer: ‘We already sent him to rehab’

Posted: Wednesday, December 15, 2021. 3:28 pm CST.

By Benjamin Flowers: This week a video began circulating of a police officer, in uniform, apparently too drunk to stand on his own and being assisted by other officers into a station. After seeing the video, the Commissioner of Police said that he was embarrassed that the situation occurred the way it did.

Williams said that he was shocked to see that particular officer in that state, as he has been involved in several interventions in an attempt to help him get his problem under control.

“The particular police officer in question, we have bent over backward like an invertebrate to accommodate him, even to the extent of sending him to rehabilitation,” Williams said.

He noted that the officer was recently a part of counseling sessions done with counselor Anne Cuvas, who collaborated with the department to get officers much-needed mental health services. Williams said that he could not delve any further into details as the officer will be going before a tribunal and he did not want anything he said in the public space to affect that decision. He stressed that whatever decision is taken at the tribunal, he will yield to.

Speaking on the public outcry for better services being made available to police officers, Williams said that officers also need to do their part to ensure their recovery as the onus is ultimately on them as adults.
