Corozal Sugar Cane Producers Association (CSCPA) board threatens injunction over Sunday AGM

Posted: Friday, January 7, 2022. 3:07 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: The Corozal Sugar Cane Producers Association (CSCPA) board of directors has announced that those who organized a planned annual general meeting on Sunday in Corozal would be taken to court for an injunction on the basis of illegality.

The current board chaired by Vladimir Puck sent a press release today citing their legal advice that the meeting is illegal and that members should not attend as it continues to feel the heat from dissident members or ex-members, depending on who you ask.

The CSCPA release also reminds that according to Fairtrade International with which the CSCPA is allied, “any unwarranted breach of certification standards, will be dealt with in either a suspension or decertification.” It also points to the rise and spread of the Omicron variant of COVID-19 which is indeed taking a toll in the North.

The dissident farmers say the Ministry of Health and Wellness has set out a means by which the meeting could be completed.

The CSCPA also referred to the conduct of its previous elections, managed and endorsed by the Sugar Industry Control Board (SICB).

After its formation in 2015, the first annual general meeting was held at the Corozal Town Civic Center which endorsed the interim board of directors as a full board. This board would serve for three years. Thereafter there were elections in the four zones comprising the Association: Zones 1 and 4 in 2017, electing two directors for a three-year term; Zone 2 in 2018 and Zone 3 in 2019. The members for Zones 1 and 4 would thus have their terms up in 2020; Zone 2 in 2021 and Zone 3 this year.
