House of Culture hosts George Price exhibit

By Aaron Humes: On the occasion of George Price Day and his birthday, the House of Culture (Belize City) has opened an exhibition on his life with images shared by his family.

Prime Minister John Briceño, who counts himself fortunate to have learned at the feet of the great man, recalled his combination of the visionary with humility that helped him relate to the common, ordinary man – a feeling that more than once brought “cold seed.”

So many Belizeans have these stories – and that makes it difficult, Briceño said, to untangle the man from the politician. “A man who described himself as a labourer, but yet he was doing great things for this country – turning a colony where people never thought that we could have become a country. They were saying none of the qualities to become a country. Yet he was steadfast in his beliefs that Belize can become a modern country in the Caribbean and in Central America and can one day play a critical role in this region. That man never lost sight of what he was destined to accomplish.”

Minister for Culture Francis Fonseca highlighted his service to the Belizean people as well as his character and noted that being a politician and a leader made much of what Mr. Price was and is. Of course, he had started with a different ambition of service, as a priest, and that religious background also stayed with him.

Fonseca explained, “At NICH [the National Institute of Culture and History], we understand and appreciate that we have a special duty and responsibility to this country to preserve the legacy of George Price, to build on that legacy and to make sure that the generations that come after us will know about George Price, will know not only what they read in books, but will understand and appreciate this great man’s life’s work of service to our nation.”
