Five men busted for illegal logging; only four brought to court as the fifth tests positive for COVID-19

By BBN Staff: Four out of a group of five men appeared in court on Monday to answer to illegal logging charges; the fifth man, however, could not make it as he is under quarantine after testing positive for COVID-19.

Louis Crawford, 31; Granville Crawford, 50; Robert Chi, 39; and Byron Jimenez all appeared unrepresented in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court to answer to one count each of converting logs into lumber without being granted a license by the Forestry Department and one count each of unlawful possession of forestry produce.

The men all pleaded not guilty and were granted bail in the sum of $1,500 and scheduled to return to court on March 24, 2022.

The fifth defendant, Harton Jackson, will face the courts once his mandatory quarantine of 14 days is up.

Police say that the men were found at a Sawmill site in Corozalito Village on Friday, January 21 with the items.

They were caught with 12 Santa Marua logs equivalent to 534.4 board feet, 14 drunken baymen logs equivalent to 615 board feet, 43 pieces of sawn drunken baymen lumber equivalent to 401.3 board full, 9 Gombolimbo logs equivalent to 965 board feet, 117 pieces of sawn Gombolimbo lumber equivalent to 454 board feet, 2 Habin logs equivalent to 96.3 board feet, 2- black poisonwood logs equivalent to 222.6 board feet, 2 bastard Rosewood logs equivalent to 128.8 board feet, 1 Cotton Tree log equivalent to 233.8 board feet, 10 bullet tree log equivalent to 80 board feet all of which they had no logging license granted to them to have by the Forest Department.
