Four fishermen from Northern Belize allegedly caught with hundreds of undersized conch

By BBN Staff: Four Fishermen from northern Belize have been charged with being in possession of undersized conch.

The men, 40-year-old Ronald Estuardo Escobar, 43-year-old Yovanie Otoniel Tun, 44-year-old Luis Alfredo Martinez, and 27-year-old Aldair Orel Tzu appeared in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday. They were charged jointly with Edgar Pott, who was sick and unable to appear in court.

The first to be arraigned was Escobar who allegedly had 31 undersized conchs; followed by Tun who allegedly had 121 undersized conch; Martinez was next who allegedly had 37 undersized conchs; while Tzul, the youngest of the fishermen was last to be arraigned for allegedly having 111 undersized conchs. They all pleaded not guilty to the charges and since they were summoned to come to court, no bail was necessary. they are due back in court on March 20.

The Fisheries Department alleges that the men were caught with the prohibited conch on the night of December 21, 2021, near Lighthouse Reef in a skiff named El Andrelat.
