By Aaron Humes: Belizean police have a new tool in their continued efforts to fight crime and particularly cyber-crime.
A new digital forensic laboratory (DFL), according to Commissioner of Police Chester Williams, provides police the ability to further search “the Internet, searching computer devices and that sort of thing and so we are grateful to the UNODC for this very generous donation of computers and software that is going to enable us to be able to properly investigate cyber-crime, child pornography, fraud, and other internet-related crimes.”
The Commissioner mentioned the rise of Internet defamation, particularly through Facebook “fake accounts”, and warned offenders that they will be unmasked, in collaboration with the Facebook organization, and dealt with according to the CyberCrime Act of 2020 and the forthcoming new Defamation Act, the former of which legislates technology companies to assist public agencies in their investigations.
Minister of Home Affairs Kareem Musa called the digital forensic laboratory “one step closer to ensuring that criminal wrongs that hide in the dark shadows of information technology are successfully detected, investigated and deterred. The good guys have one more resource to bring some justice to those who need it.” It forms part of the three-pronged national digital security platform: legislation, capacity, and publicity
In addition to the hardware and software, he said, responsible officers are being trained in their use.
