Ruta Maya Belize River Challenge starts on Friday in San Ignacio

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The biggest canoe race in Belize, the 2022 Ruta Maya Belize River Challenge starts on Friday morning at 7:00 am under the Hawkesworth Bridge in San Ignacio. The 177-mile race is staged through four days finishing on Monday past the Belcan Bridge in Belize City.

There was no race in 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2020, the race had just been staged when the country went into lockdown in late March.

From Hawksworth Bridge in San Ignacio, the first stage goes to Banana Bank on Friday, March 4.

Stage 2 will head from Banana Bank to Double Head Cabbage on Saturday, March 5.

On Sunday, March 6, the Ruta Maya Belize River Challenge goes from Double Head Cabbage to Henderson Bank in Burrell Boom.

The last stage will be on Monday, March 7, from Burrell Boom to Belize City finishing by the Belize City Centre.
