By Rubén Morales Iglesias:

Minister of Infrastructure Development and Housing Julius Espat traveled to Paraiso in Corozal this week to hand over two more houses under the Modular Houses Pilot Project.

“Honorable Julius Espat, along with the caretaker for Corozal North David Castillo handed over two houses from the Modular Houses Pilot Project from the Ministry of Infrastructure Development and Housing (MIDH),” posted Castillo on social media.

“This project being part of Plan Belize manifesto, which is projected to continue helping people from the different constituencies with more houses in the future.”

Castillo said the Manzanilla and Flores-Charley families were grateful.

“We serve all, red and blue,” said Minister Espat, referring to Paraiso being in Corozal North which was won by the UDP in the last general elections.

He also said that a large contingent from the MIDH’s Housing Department was present so that they could see that the work they are doing is important.

“We want you to understand that what you are doing changes people’s lives. One house at a time. One person, one family at a time,” the Minister said.

“Mister Jorge Manzanilla (one of the recipients) to us, is as important as the foreign presidents and prime ministers that are visiting the country right now,” Minister Espat said.

“You see weh I deh. I deh with unu because that is where I believe we should be, always. Respect to all the foreign dignitaries. Respect to all the high-ranking politicians. Respect to all of them. I prefer di yah di eat escabeche, di chill, and work, and feel, and be beside the people that need us.

“Why? Let’s not fool ourselves. I wouldn’t be here, and the PUP Government would not be in government if it wasn’t for the people of Belize, hard-working cañeros, the hard-working farmers, the construction workers, the person that digs the drain, the person that grades the road, the person that builds the houses, the secretaries in the offices, the teachers, the stevedores. We would not be here if it wasn’t for you all. So, you all are the champions.”

Minister Espat then switched to Spanish and spoke about those who criticize and say that the houses are too small, that they could be two-story houses, but no one makes houses that only cost $25 a week, he emphasized.”

“Nowhere in the world,” he said.

“But it’s a house. You have to make it a home. Now you can go to the bank and use it as collateral to be able to fund your children’s education, to be able to improve your family’s life. To be able to do, as my grandfather used to say, what you want with it. Once we give you the key you decide what to do with it. The only thing we know is that we are giving you an opportunity in this life to improve yourselves. You have a house so that when it rains you don’t get wet. You have a house so that if there is an earthquake or a hurricane, you’re safe. You have a house for your children.”

He then recalled the George Price tenet.

“That is the dream of George Price really. He said social integration … work for the people. And that’s what we are doing.”

Minister Espat also paid tribute to Valdemar Castillo, Minister of Housing during the George Price era. He said Castillo, who was present for the handing over, had paved the way along with George Price, for people like him to now be in government.
