International Women’s Day being observed under theme: ‘Gender equality today for a sustainable tomorrow’

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: International Women’s Day is being observed worldwide today, March 8, 2022, being under theme: “Gender equality today for a sustainable tomorrow”.

“Let’s break our own bias and help others accept that whether deliberate or unconscious, bias makes it difficult for women to move ahead. Knowing that bias exists isn’t enough. Our continued action is needed to level the playing field,” said Belize’s Special Envoy for the Development of Families and Children Rossana Briceño today as she wished her “Belize and global sisters a Happy Women’s Day”.

“March is the month we honor all things woman… our skills, our role, our abilities, our achievements and we highlight those policy steps and actions that are necessary to see us rise to occupy a greater presence in our decision making for national leadership and development,” said the Special Envoy earlier.

International Women’s Day has been celebrated on March 8 every year since 1911. The day recognizes the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women. It also serves to raise awareness about women’s equality and to help step up gender parity.

Just last week, a She4She Champions World Summit, led by Belmopan Mayor Sheran Palacio and the Mayors Association, was held in Belize City to promote women’s equality.

“Women are increasingly being recognized as more vulnerable to climate change impacts than men, as they constitute the majority of the world’s poor and are more dependent on the natural resources which climate change threatens the most,” said an article published today by the United Nations (UN).

The UN article said women and girls are effective and powerful leaders and change-makers… involved in sustainability initiatives around the world.

“Continuing to examine the opportunities, as well as the constraints, to empower women and girls to have a voice and be equal players in decision-making related to climate change and sustainability is essential for sustainable development and greater gender equality. Without gender equality today, a sustainable future, and an equal future, remains beyond our reach,” said the UN.

Marches are being held around the world today to promote women’s equality.
