Sir Barry Bowen’s tomb in San Ignacio raided

Posted: Saturday, March 12, 2022. 4:00 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: It is not clear what they were after, but a person or persons not yet identified apparently damaged and looted the tomb of the late Sir Barry Manfield Bowen, buried in San Ignacio Town, Cayo District.

According to police, on Monday this week, an area resident reported hearing loud noises in the cemetery but thought it was personnel from the Big-H factory working late.

Police found the destroyed tomb and damage to a nearby one and believe the culprits also looted Sir Barry’s tomb, leaving the coffin box open and a foul stench in the area.

Sir Barry was laid to rest after an official funeral 12 years ago this month, after dying suddenly in a plane crash while approaching Ambergris Caye. A family of four – American missionary parents and their son and daughter who were accompanying him – were all killed on impact in an area immediately south of the San Pedro Town airstrip.

Sir Barry, who owned Bowen and Bowen Limited, left a giant imprint on Belizean business history, expanding the family-owned company into one of Belize’s largest employers, as well as in conservation by establishing the Gallon Jug Estate.
