Diving in Belize gets royal thumbs up from Duke and Duchess of Cambridge

By Benjamin Flowers: The world was watching Belize during the visit of Prince William and his wife Kate Middleton, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, and while they left Belize today, the royals gave Belize one last farewell by telling the world that scuba diving in Belize is amazing.

The Duke and Duchess took to their official Instagram account with a video of their scuba diving trip in Belize during their visit on the occasion of the Queen of England’s Platinum Jubilee. Apart from praising the pristine waters and aquatic life, the royals also commended Belize’s conservation efforts to save the reef and ensure fish species are protected.

“Belize is home to the second-largest barrier reef in the world. While the effects of climate change are evident, the Government of Belize and communities across the country deserve huge recognition for their efforts to restore this incredible marine environment – with a commitment to protect 30% of it by 2030,” the Duke said.

“On Sunday, we were lucky enough to spend time diving at South Water Caye, directly above the spectacular Belize Barrier Reef. It was a privilege to see for ourselves the world-leading ocean conservation work being done here.”

He went on to say that it is evident Belizeans are making major efforts to preserve land and marine resources, and that the international community should support those efforts.

Their tour of Belize began on Saturday, March 19 and despite the protest of villagers from Indian Creek which made headlines around the world, the remainder of their trip carried on without incident. Their Belize leg ended yesterday and the royals flew to Jamaica earlier today for their next stop in the regional tour.
