By Hugh O’Brien: In a one of it’s kind international drama, Award winning Actor, Will Smith slapped popular Comedian Chris Rock on stage at the Oscars on Sunday night. The incident unfolded after Chris Rock made a joke about the shaved hairdo of his wife, Jada Pinkett Smith.
“Jada, can’t wait for GI Jane 2,” Chris Rock said on stage in reference to the bald hairdo. Pinkett Smith had shaved her hair as she suffers from an autoimmune hair loss condition known as Alopecia. The comedian’s joke was referring to a 1997 film GI Jane where the star Demi Moore acted with a fully shaved hairstyle.
Smith did not take lightly to the comment and walked up on stage and hit Chris Rock in the face telling him to keep his wife out of his ‘f…..g’ mouth.
Chris Rock initially appeared both surprised and shocked saying “Wow! Will Smith just smacked the ‘f…’ out of me,” but recovered quickly noting that the incident made last night’s Oscars “the greatest night in the history of television”.
Will Smith was at the Oscars to receive the first Oscar of his career for his role as the father of tennis sensations Venus and Serena Williams in the movie King Richard. While on stage for the formal receipt of his Oscar, Smith apologized tearfully.
“I want to apologize to the Academy. I want to apologize to all my fellow nominees…I look like a crazy father, just like they said about Richard Williams, but love will make you do crazy things,” he said.
A clearly distraught and tearful Smith was later seen with, and being consoled by, Denzel Washington and Tyler Perry.
Will Smith is an internationally renowned actor, but became popular very early in Belize for his role in the comedy series ‘Fresh Prince of Bel Air’.
